Polychondrosis is a disease in which cartilage – the tissue that protects bones and joints – becomes inflamed.

The areas most commonly affected are the ears, nose, and airways. This rare disease is also called relapsing polychondritis, and symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Treatment

Polychondrosis treatment is based on what parts of the body are affected and the severity of symptoms. Treatment may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications, medications that suppress the immune system, and/or medications to treat infections
  • Procedures to keep airways open
  • Surgery to repair damage caused by inflamed cartilage
