Infertility

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after a year of trying. If a woman gets pregnant but keeps having miscarriages or stillbirths, that is also classified as infertility.

Overview and Symptoms

The most common causes of female infertility include problems with ovulation, damage to the fallopian tubes or uterus, or problems with the cervix. As women’s fertility decreases with age, age can also contribute to infertility.

Treatment

Female infertility is most often treated by one or more of the following:

  • Hormones to address a hormone imbalance, endometriosis or short menstrual cycle.
  • Fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation.
  • Antibiotics to stop an infection.
  • Minor surgery to remove blockage or scar tissue from the fallopian tubes, uterus or pelvic area.
  • Reproductive assistance such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
