Neurocognitive Disorders refer to a group of brain conditions causing mild or major cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease, cerebrovascular disease, frontotemporal dementia, and traumatic brain injury, in addition to other disorders.
These disorders typically cause changes in memory, attention, language, and/or behavior. In many conditions the cognitive problems occur later in life and tend to worsen over time. With head trauma, symptoms may improve over time.
Neuropsychological assessment is helpful when your doctor suspects a neurocognitive disorder. The assessment will help determine a diagnosis and guide your treatment. Your doctor may prescribe medications to improve your cognitive function or reduce psychiatric and mood symptoms that contribute to cognitive problems. Cognitive and rehabilitation therapies may also be helpful.
