Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), formerly known as ADD, is a common brain disorder, in children and adults, marked by inattention and/or impulsivity.
ADHD symptoms can evolve as one ages. In childhood, impulsivity is most common (e.g., fidgeting, talking too much, always “on the go). By elementary school, inattention becomes more prominent (trouble paying attention and completing schoolwork or chores, forgetting daily tasks). For adults, ADHD symptoms often result in difficulties at work and with personal relationships.
Diagnosis of ADHD requires an evaluation by a licensed clinician, such as a psychiatrist or neuropsychologist. While there is no cure, treatment can reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatment for ADHD includes medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments.
